What is the NUS Research Scholarship?
It’s a fully-funded doctoral or research-master’s scholarship offered by the National University of Singapore (NUS). It includes full tuition fee subsidy and a monthly stipend, awarded competitively to outstanding graduate students admitted to full-time research programmes at NUS.
Who is eligible to apply?
Must have a bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class Honours (Upper Division) or equivalent.
Must have secured admission to an NUS full-time PhD or Master’s by research programme.
Must meet the criteria for MOE subsidy eligibility—this applies across nationalities.
Can international students receive it?
Yes — all nationalities are eligible, including Singapore citizens, PRs, and international students. The scholarship is awarded on academic excellence regardless of nationality.
What financial support does it include?
Full waiver of tuition fees for the duration of study.
Monthly stipend based on citizenship and field:
Singapore Citizens: SGD 3,500/month (PhD, economics/history) or SGD 3,200 (other disciplines)
Permanent Residents: SGD 3,100 or SGD 2,800
International: SGD 2,700 or SGD 2,500
After passing the PhD Qualifying Exam, scholars receive an additional SGD 500/month
What’s the scholarship duration and renewal process?
Awarded initially for one year, renewable each semester based on satisfactory research and academic progress.
Maximum tenure: up to 4 years for PhD, and 2 years for Master’s candidates
Are there any service bonds?
No service bond or repayment obligation is attached to the NUS Research Scholarship—it is bond-free.
Are scholars allowed to work or hold other awards during tenure?
Generally no — scholars may not take up employment or hold other scholarships/fellowships without prior approval from NUS. They may, however, be required to assist in teaching or departmental duties if needed.
